P&I Survey

A P&I survey is an inspection carried out for a marine insurance club that offers Protection and Indemnity (P&I) coverage.

These surveys can be proactive, examining a vessel’s condition to ensure it meets the club’s standards for risk management and seaworthiness, or reactive, investigating a claim after a maritime incident.

The primary purpose is to identify risks, assess damage, and establish liability to prevent future claims and losses.

P&I Surveys primarily focus on risks related to third-party liabilities, including crew injury/illness, cargo loss or damage (claims against the vessel), pollution, towage liabilities, and collision damage to fixed/floating objects. The survey identifies vessel deficiencies that could lead to these specific liabilities.

A proactive survey (often a condition survey) is scheduled to assess the general condition and risk profile of a vessel before or during insurance coverage, aimed at preventing future claims. A reactive survey is conducted immediately after an incident (e.g., grounding, personal injury, major cargo damage) to investigate the cause, establish the facts, and determine the Club’s potential liability.

The findings provide the Owner with an independent risk assessment report highlighting areas of non-compliance or potential hazard. Addressing these issues promptly helps the Owner to maintain classification standards, reduce the frequency of future claims, and ensure the vessel meets the stringent requirements set by their P&I Club for continued coverage.
